What happened to rock 105?, 4 share drop
ReplyDeletetoo bad this is old news now.
ReplyDeleteHope Billy & Boner's ego does the same as their numbers did.
ReplyDeleteThe Duke looks like it had its best book in the end... and classic country in the top 5 despite several frequency changes over the years. Glad Citadel decided to drop the embargo.
ReplyDeletebig country book as all country stations took a jump....rock 105 came back to where they really are.....wonder what the addition of Hippie and Big will do and will Pulse change any with Jammer gone???? WIth th duke gone will us101 get their shares back or will they go to uuq???
ReplyDeletelet's hope those shares will go to wuuq, but if any station was to change to country which would it be, hmmmmmmmm ?, my money is on wdod,or walv
ReplyDeleteI would think that wplz or walv has the biggest need for a change.
ReplyDeletePlease, at least, make it Change we can believe in. All Obama speeches all the time.
ReplyDeleteBig book for UUQ, USY and DOD.
ReplyDeleteRock 105 and KXJ are back to where everyone thought they would be.
Rock 105 will always do this up and down magic act so long as they cater to men 18-34. They are the most unreliable demographic in this city.
KXJ shows that sampling doesn't make a radio station competitive; good radio does. Now, they don't have either.
GOW takes a tumble. Why??
Still scratching my head about PLZ and ESPN radio. What a disaster. 2 lowest ranking stations in the market and have no buzz, energy, or listeners after 2 years. What is Brewer doing????
When I think of the radio landscape in Chattanooga, I think of the stations ranked the way they are now.
Two people today told me that a former Duke employee is going to help Brewer launch a country station...Wonder who that could be?
ReplyDeleteWell that will be another half-thought out Brewer failure.
ReplyDeleteSays you. The Duke might not have been a HUGE ratings winner. But they did a hell of a job distracting the heck out of WUSY. Causing them to create the flanker that forever changed the market. And listen The Duke always sounded pretty good. I doubt the above post has any legs to it. Duane & Abby are gone to memphis and Lila is doing National Guard stuff these days. Who's left to help Jim?
ReplyDeleteIf Brewer did country the right way, it'd be a moneymaker. Look at what WUUQ has been able to do with NO promotion, NO street noise, NO buzz, and Nothing but two live day parts.
ReplyDeleteAnd between ratings and revenue...which do you think is more important in today's radio climate?
It is difficult to be 3rd in any format! If Brewer switches to country they would find it very difficult to move ahead of WUSY or WUUQ.
ReplyDelete3rd may be difficult but a 4.3 is a whole lot eaiser to sell than a 1.0 share. And I can promise you that The Duke scored well in certain demos. So, if Brewer had the right sales people could make some money.
ReplyDeleteBrewer can have all the right sales staff he wants. If he doesn't have the right airstaff, promotions and marketing it means nothing. And guess what? He want!
ReplyDeleteOutside of purchasing an established WJTT - Everything Brewer's radio fingers has touched turns to soot.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what the format, Brewer is a failed radio company that has no vision or strategy for long-term success.
"All Charlie Pride...All The Time..."
ReplyDeletewell at least the Brewer's throw great "launch" parties.
ReplyDeleteif they'd spend as much time on promotion & programming as they did making the inside of the building look pretty maybe they would make some money.
"3rd may be difficult but a 4.3 is a whole lot easier to sell than a 1.0 share. And I can promise you that The Duke scored well in certain demos. So, if Brewer had the right sales people could make some money."
ReplyDeleteYes you are right but unless you are top 3-5 in a demo you are not getting bought by agencies, you have to rely on local direct business and we all know that is hard to do in this economy. This is why The Duke failed. Not because the station was not good or the salespeople were not good. But being 3rd in a genre and somewhere in the 5th-10th region in ranking is TOUGH!!!!
Good thing these are 12+ numbers and they mean absolutely nothing. :)
ReplyDeleteTWO WORDS: PANDORA, BITCHES...
ReplyDeleteYou forgot RDIO
ReplyDeleteWKNC or WPRB are great college stations.
Pity we don't have any vibrant local station.
And if we get yet another religious one I'll scream.
Interesting Arbitron..tho as someone else said above, these are 12+ numbers. The 25-54 numbers would be more relevant. And more revealing..
ReplyDeleteCountry book obviously. Almost 25% of these numbers are in that format. I wonder if Citadel wishes they had stayed with country on WOGT? They were 'oldies' once & did ok with that..do they knee jerk over there ya think?
Speaking of knee jerk, look at Brewer. One station with success, ever, and no competition. I wonder how their management would handle a competitor? It appears they have no clue with their other stations against competition. I never hear anything about any of their stations having presence in the community. Change is hard for most people, except there.
Then there's Clear Channel..Rock 105 got a 'gift' in the previous ratings, but even the current rating is too good for them..a horrible station. All their properties besides the country stick, add up to only 10% of the market. So are they only good at country? Or is the previous poster right..there just are no vibrant stations here period.
The only knee-jerk company is Brewer. period.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the Duke-to-Big flip was what you would call "knee-jerk" - ill-advised? maybe. actually, probably.
these "baby boomer" stations might grab some of the last few simpletons relying on terrestrial music radio. But highly doubt they will bill well.
The world has changed. and technologically speaking the world has flipped upside down as recent as just the last couple years, but more specifically the last decade.
face it radio guys and gals. You can not deny it any longer. Jukebox radio just doesn't work anymore. End of discussion. If you don't agree, you are wrong.
I already know all your tired old arguments. You are wrong. Look at the budgets, promotions, marketing, payroll, etc. They are not stretched so thin they are basically non-existent b/c of a bad economy. It's b/c this product is no longer a relevant source of entertainment.
Yes, some people still listen to the radio. The key word here? "some"
only some people.
The entire industry completely dropped the ball by not utilizing the HD technology before it was too late. Not sure if it would have saved the industry or not, but it would have at least been a fighting chance. Now, it's too late.
It won't be much longer until everything is connected to the internet. We're already very close. You think the initial Sirius & XM scare was bad? Wait 'til you can listen to anything in the world on your internet radios.
It was easy to shoot down these "futuristic ideas" for a while. When you deny the power of this now you just sound stupid.
I'm not saying FM (or even AM) radio is dead. I'm just saying the status quo of current radio is dying miserably. News/Talk & Sports have a fighting chance. Sports Play-by-play can sell. A few big sticks will manage to stick around for a while b/c of strength in numbers.
But this competition thing isn't going to work. 3 classic rock/hits/whatever stations can't survive. 3-4 country stations won't work. There's not enough money to go around for 2+ teeny bopper stations.
You might sell a few Hot & ready Pizzas during drive time but most businesses are beginning to realize that spending any amount of significant money on most stations in town is placing that cash dircetly in the garbage can.
This isn't a knock on any programers or radio people in Chattanooga. It's a victim of circumstance. But to deny this just makes you look and sound dumb.
outstanding and very true post. lazy local stations are done.
ReplyDeleteBest thing for any up and coming local DJ to do is MOVE! Stay here for a short time and then move on. Chattanooga is full of lazy same been there, done that recycled jocks. Think about it - you can't move up until someone dies! GET OUT NOW WHILE YOU CAN!
ReplyDeletenah, the best thing for any up and coming local DJ is to change his/her career choice.
ReplyDeleteNot a good idea to invest time & money in an industry that is dying.
Listen radio is still strong and will continue to be until something comes along that can do it completely better. Noticed I said completely! Nothing currently can deliver content as quick and concise as radio on the go and that's TOTALY FREE. Not internet (because it's not FREE) and even then you have to build out the site and layout content before it's ready to load, not satelite (because it's not FREE) and not everyone had satelite. And the Ipod can only deliver music. A majority of People still want that relationship with Jocks and information like weather and traffic. It may be down but ceratinly not out!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah and before you say it, Smart phones are not free. So services like Pandora over Iphone and Blackberry are cool...But not FREE as long as you pay for your wireless carrier.
ReplyDeleteThere are groups in town that are still billing major dollars and haven't seen the dramatic crash that people have been predicting for years.
ReplyDeleteCC is not billing what it use to but it is still a multi million dollar company as is Citadel and Behackel. They are all doing something right! You think noone listens to a local radio station.....Move their station, fire their fave dj, change formats and you will know that people do listen and they listen ALOT!!!!!! PPM markets are continuing to prove it.
ReplyDeleteoh how predictable. the "oh yeah, well, what about that station that billed this?"
ReplyDeleteor
aahhhh, well, "radio is free" guy
yeah. tap water is free too.
Internet is not free? Cell phones are not free? Well that is where you are actually correct.
But that's the point. You don't have the internet or cell phone for the radio. you have it for many other reasons. But guess what comes with it guys & gals?????
More entertainment options than your wildest dreams ever thought was possible. You know, the options you continue to deny are there.
Only radio people would say that "majority of People still want that relationship with Jocks and information" - and I feel ya. i really do. I wish it was true.
But it's not. The internet is not some thing that only some people have. People who have money to spend are connected to the internet. And they are using their connectivity. They are not listening to some FM radio station for music.
sorry radio guys and gals. I hate it too. I'm a radio person as well.
It's evolution baby.
only a radio person would say: "A majority of People still want that relationship with Jocks and information"
ReplyDeleteand I am a radio person.
Here's something that kind of throws a wrench in your "other options aren't free" defense.
First on the satellite radio thing. That's where you are correct. satellite radio is a bust. They aren't relevant either. That technology is crashing and burning probably faster than terrestrial radio.
that's your kinda-sorta good news.
here's your completely-for-real bad news.
Again you are correct; your apps, and links, and internet radio stations, streaming video & audio & so on and so forth are not free. Here's the part you are missing.
80% of the country is connected to the internet. We all already have cell phones. Eventually smartphones will be the majority. And all the entertainment that comes with those technologies are then as free as free can be.
We don't pay for the internet & our cell phones to listen to the radio. We pay for our cell phone and internet and then use them for everything the can do. And they can do more and more every single day.
Internet is your absolute best source for entertainment. It fuels everything. And we all want it. Most of us can't live without it anymore. Your Computer, your TV, & your cell phones have been taken over by it. And soon, so will your radio.
I love AM & FM radio. I'm not a hater. It will never completely die. But it's fading very fast.
And to continue to make this point. News/Talk/Sports radio & music radio should really be put in seperate categories.
One, if done correctly, can be very successful. The other, if done correctly, can tread water while the other subsidizes it.
Nobody who matters relys on a FM radio station for music.
The last 2 posts are as rambling as anything I've ever seen here and makes no sense no matter how I cross my eyes to see it.
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness some folks need to find another avenue to vent on. boring six page post is why gow takes tumbles...just as boring as what they put out.
ReplyDeletePerhaps corporate Cluster F^&*ed Radio has killed radio.
ReplyDeleteless voice tracking and programming from the home office and more connecting with the local scene could save both music and talk.
