Bobby's second time around with Jim and now Max's second time around. This market is filled with recycled jocks. When will they learn to bring in some fresh out of market talent. The Brewer's have got to be the DUMBEST groups of broadcasters in Chattanooga!

Sounds like someone at the Pulse is jealous. Why don't you guys go get some ratings instead of hiring a bunch of dead beat Beatles fans and burn out radio guys. Come on is Max Hackett the best you can do? WOW! At least Citadel does not have a rotating door of burn outs like Bobby and Max!

ReplyDeleteOutside looking in: It all started to go down hill when 953 was turned to Jack FM. The Brewers got greedy and had to try at a larger peice of the already crowded Chattanooga radio pie. Could have just stayed in Cleveland and been happy with dominating that market. But NOOOOO had to ruin a good thing. Now four years later and all down hill. News radio is hard from all angles and their not getting it. And lets face it the Brewers may have this URBAN thing down. But every other format they have tried in this market has failed. And the new signal they are about to launch on 106.9 it has already failed. How do I know this? I believe in history repeating itself!

ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of GOW but I will tell you one thing they have going for them is STEADY. Besides the Robert T Nash exit they have one of the the most steady stables of talent in the market. That at the very least is worth some level of respect. You can't say that about PLZ and hell they've only been on the air for what a year!

Look at the ratings and the revenue in WDEF morning drive alone. And yes, Luther has more class than most of the other broadcasters combined. A GREAT example of how taking the high road ALWAYS pays off.
ReplyDeleteSeems like the original thread here was about the classless firing of Bobby Byrd... by phone, no less..and the questionable hiring of Max Hackett. If you do not have the guts to fire someone face to face, maybe you shouldn't be in management in the first place.
And if you don't think the " Max Hackett Meltdown " will take place, then you obviously aren't as in tune with this media market as you think you are.
Bottom line is, if you think any other broadcasting company is seriously worried about what the Max Hackett impact is gonna be in this market...you obviously aren't thinking.

Nash preceded Jeff Styles at WZRA and replaced Chester Smith at WGOW...Nash ain't done with this town...Look for him to resurface sooner rather than later...And it won't be where you think...

ReplyDeleteI got a chance to listen to Max this morning. He sounded much better than I anticipated. Very cordial, interesting guests and interviews. I am the first to say I didn't think I'd like it but I did and will listen again.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Bobby but Max sounds much better for the format. WGOW has no reason to lose any sleep, but I have to give kudos where they are due. Max, you sound good man. Welcome back.

More people have been canned from Clear Channel and Brewer alone just this year than bahakel and Citadel in the last 5 years! I give Max 3 months and he'll be out. Pick yur reason!
ReplyDeleteRTNs history of racism is well documented, and his twittering continues to document it. I doubt anyone around here is going to hire him. He just got too full of himself and thought he had so much power that he could say or do whatever he wanted. Other than a few diehards there was virtually no negative reaction to his firing. Hopefully all he will be able to do now is write tweets about people he doesn't like and live off the income of his wife, but that probably isn't what it used to be since he can't give her any more free plugs on the radio.

And she had a good voice that sounded good first thing in the morning. Another stupid, aragant mistake by male owners. Hey, here's an idea. Got any female rejects from GOW you can hire?
ReplyDeleteHeard Denice on the radio yesterday with Louis. Max apparently took the first of many to come days off. It seems she wasn't fired like Bobby or they wouldn't let her be on the radio there again. Her last day doing the news appeared to happen the day before Max started maybe she has passed working experience with him and wanted out. I liked Lisa too but she was too aggressive for me. I am not a chauvinist but women can be flighty and microphone hogs. I wish that the guys didn't block Denice from talking she had some odd ideas sometimes and I couldn't tell what her politics were but she made me re-think my opinions especially after my wife agreed with her opinion. Since she hasn't been on my wife doesn't like to listen to the show in the morning because she misses her and a female opinion. I agree with others now that there is not a female in the morning or the afternoon it's just a WGOW lite station wonder who the next "has been out of work WGOW employee" will show up next. They had something original, and I assume an Edward R. Murrow award must be something special I have never heard WGOW say they won it.I guess I will have to go back to listening to Jeff in the morning again. Much better than Max.

And if you listened to his show for more than a day you'd hear something racist almost every day, like saying WGOW wouldn't replace its fax because their Jew accountant told them not to. If you don't think he's racist either you never listened to his show or you're one yourself.
Some of RTN's "jew" or "people darker than blue" remarks were just part of his shtick. If YOU listened every day YOU would hear him admit such. As for his recent tweets, I don't tweet.

ReplyDeleteWanted to say thank you for the nice compliments. I wish I could know who you are but everyone on this site appears to be "Anonymous" Even the nice people!! It was great to see the rating went up for WPLZ especially with such a specific target audience, but I am not surprised in a way because Bobby could be entertaining and king of the teases to keep people listening through the quarter hours.
ReplyDeleteI actually didn't intend to stay as long as I did...originally I just filled in when someone called in or went on vacation but it was nice to work with Louis, Chris, Dale and then Bobby too. I had gotten typecast in AC for so long and burned out of playing Celine Dion it was nice to prove to people and myself that I could do other things too. I had an opportunity to stay with the company but it would have only been part-time pay and I couldn't afford that.
Do I miss getting up at 2:30am? absolutely not!! But if Louis needs someone to fill-in when Max can't be there I have no problem with that.
Again, thanks to those of you who said nice things and I agree with you 100% about needing a female perspective in talk radio. Not just hire a female for the sake of being female but someone who is well rounded on a variety of topics.

ReplyDeleteI DID listen to RTN everyday, and him playfully saying that a racist statement was "theater of the mind" was akin to someone calling a black person the n word and then saying "but I'm not racist, some of my best friends are black". And when he said he plays Othello "like a real coon" he said nothing about it being schtick.

ReplyDeleteI was a big faof Max in his first go around when it was News Talk 1150 AM and I liked him when he programmed the Real Talk station for the little time it was on the air. His last stint at Talk Radio was a disappointment. This time around, although only three weeks into it, I find him to be more like the old Max. He is quick, energetic, funny and very well informed. so what if he's been sick acouple of days? We all get sick. If it becomes a problem I am sure it will be dealt with. I also have heard his Addiction Radio show on Monday nights and he is very good on that show and it has been quite moving sometimes. It seems to me the guy has dealt with his demons and deserves another chance. he is one of the best interviewers on radio. I have come across him now and then and found him to be one of the few broadcasters who do not carry around a huge ege. He is a very nice guy and very humble in person. Hey, people grow and change. He took a better road than Parker did. Given he was off the air for something like five years I think he sounds very good three weeks into a new job with a new partner. Do we have to throw so many stones at a guy who has never done anything really bad to anybody I know of? Why not be supportive and see if he can develop a new alternative for us in the morning? Louis Lee even sounds more relaxed and better with him around. Why not admit that some people have a lot of talent and deserve to be on the radio instead of tearing everyone down because they have a job you wish you had?

I was in sales for a while with him years ago and he was always talking about "alternative revenue streams." Seems like he walks that talk. Always a very professionally run company.
